Mihai POPEAN THE EFFECT OF RELAXATION TECHNIQUES ON STUDENT MUSIC SIGHT-READING AND SHORT-TERM LEARNING UNDER TEST-INDUCED PERFORMANCE ANXIETY

ABSTRACT
There is a direct correlation between music sight-reading and instrumentalists’ aural perception, math and reading achievement scores, field-independent cognitive style, written word sensory mode preference, and GPA (Bergman, Darki, & Klingberg, 2014; Ciepluch, 1988). Sight-reading is dependent upon short-term memory functionality (Massaro, 1972; Moss, Myers & Filmore, 1970) and time-based recall (Williams, 1975), and may be adversely influenced by performance anxiety (Wilson-Roland, 2002).
Relaxation techniques were suggested as a possible strategy in order to reduce the levels of performance anxiety (Wilson-Roland, 2002). A small-scale pilot study was initiated in order to develop a method to test the effectiveness of this strategy.
Keywords: Sight-reading, student achievement, relaxation, performance, short-term memory, anxiety.

Corina CECLAN, Dan VARIU  - AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF STRONG EXPERIENCES WITH MUSIC  ABSTRACT
The present study is based on research on strong experiences with music as well as musical chills. A questionnaire was sent online, indicating a web link to a musical piece. Fourty-four participants responded by marking the moments or intervals corresponding to a strong experience, further providing a more detailed account of their experience. Results have shown that the most frequent musical feature associated with strong reactions was novelty, followed by contrast. Other less often identified features were those connected to changes in intensity, unexpected modulations, sudden pauses, reprise of the theme or resolution, all similar to those described by current literature. Regarding the emotions described, they were mostly positive or neutral/ambiguous, with a high degree of specificity, not entirely overlapping with the available scales – admiration stands out among them, a very frequent feeling, which may be part of a distinct category of music induced emotions, an aesthetic “super-emotion”. The method allowed for the observation of emotional dynamic during musical listening, resulting in patterns of tension-relaxation similar to those of narration. The subject accounts were further analyzed according to the SEM descriptive system. Finally, we assessed correspondences between the self-reported mechanisms and those described by the Juslin and Vastfjäll’s BRECVEMA model as well as Scherer and Zentner’s production rules model.
Keywords: Strong experiences with music, music and emotion, chills, content analysis.

Laura STAN - THE INFLUENCE OF SOUND ON FOOD PERCEPTION ABSTRACT
A number of crossmodal associations have been described in multisensory perception and evaluation of food. Consumers’ decision about food selection, consumption and preference is highly influenced by internal and external factors. Auditory cues play an important role in decision process, although consumers are not necessary aware of them. This article reviews the latest findings about correlations between sound, flavor and pleasure and underlines the applicability of these findings in improving the consumer’s quality of life.
Keywords: Multisensory perception, background music, sound, food acceptance, flavor pleasantness, crossmodal associations.

Beatrice IORDACHE - BRAIN-COMPUTER INTERFACE: THE MINDWAVE MOBILE INTERACTIVE DEVICE FOR BRAINWAVE MONITORING  ABSTRACT
The idea of using brain activity as a path to communicate with external devices quickly evolved in the last decades. Brain-reading technologies are starting to be used in different life areas, since we have companies that launched such innovative tools on the market. In this matter, the most common method for measuring and observing the brain activity is the electroencephalogram (EEG), used mainly in the medical field with important research related to disability problems. In the enthusiastic attempt to discover the complexity of the brain, researchers sought for a way to reproduce all its intricated functionsas accurately as the possibilities of the latest tehnology can. A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) represents a direct communication path between the active brain and an external device, a graphic result of it’s monitoring process in real time. This article presents a type of device of this kind, the MindWave Mobile by NeuroSky, through which we can observe and analyse the electrical activity of the brain. The different levels of frequency of the brainwave signal are related to cognitive function like attention, and meditation. Based on NeuroSky’s own developed eSense algorithms, MindWave Mobile can detect even the very subtle levels of attention and meditation, each of them being calculated and updated every second, as seen on the monitor of the device that’s paired with. This paper also presents a related experiment using the EEG device regarding the effect of music on different people, in terms of the concentration and relaxation levels.
Keywords: EEG, brain-computer Interface, mindwave mobile headset, attention, concentration, meditation, relaxation, frequency band, music.

Stela DRĂGULIN, Fulvia Anca CONSTANTIN - SOUND-TO-COLOR SYNESTHESIA AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE LEVEL OF EMOTION  ABSTRACT
Synesthesia is long researched and debated. Some people report seeing colors and/or lights when they hear certain keys or notes in music or when they listen to or play instruments. Among those there are many musicians such as Franz Liszt, Itzhak Perlman, Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein, Jean Sibelius and Olivier Messiaen. Moreover, musicians who are also composers explained that writing music is like producing images based on colors, their mixture and shades. Researchers on synesthesia are divided: on one hand, they have views pointing out the existence of synesthetic perception and diverse possibilities to be aware of it, on the other hand they present assumptions based on case observations that are rejected scientifically. In this paper we form an opinion in favor of sound-to-color synesthesia based on two directions of research. First, we show that music can bring out colored patterns or simply colors mentioning that the colors chosen are not always constant over time, and they are not identical from one individual to another. Second, listening to music influences the level of emotion, attention and relaxation, their frequency being translated in colors of brainwave frequency bands.

Diana Elena SÂRB - MUSIC AND MOVEMENT – INDISPENSABLE DUALISM FOR AN EFFICIENT MUSICAL EDUCATION  ABSTRACT
Music and movement are essential components of human existence since the dawn of time. In childhood it is important to join the two experiential dimensions since this juxtaposition responds to basic needs, natural characteristics of the developmental stage of human personality. This research used the methodology of the psychological and pedagogical experiment and illustrated that cognition and the musical game are closely correlated in terms of learning English. The result was improvement of the linguistic performance in terms of higher level vocabulary acquition and pronunciation obtained by a test group when compared to the control group.

Sanda ONUTZ - A SHORT PRESENTATION ON HUMAN COGNITION  ABSTRACT
This article proposes to explain the human cognition in a concise manner for those who are not pundits in the field. Our mind is a very complex mechanism, capable of processing acquired information rapidly and on multiple levels. A good understanding of the details of these processes has been the subject matter of many disciplines. Despite the fact that remarkable results have been obtained by inter-disciplinary studies, cognition is only partially understood. However, the cognitive mechanisms are essentially the same in any domain of knowledge be it mathematics, music, linguistics and so on.
Keywords: Cognitivism, cognition, memory, knowledge, cognitive networks, cognitive strategies.
